The majority of human trafficking victims will be seen by a healthcare provider while being trafficked. 81% of those will be seen in a hospital. EMS providers have a unique opportunity to build relationships of trust with human trafficking victims, interview them prior to their destination, and report to the proper authorities – effectively intervening on their behalf when possible. By being trained to identify signs of labor and sex trafficking, recognize common situations and vulnerable populations, and then choose appropriate professional responses, EMS providers can be effective agents of change to protect patients against human trafficking.
