RON KANTERMAN is chief of Gold Horn Associates and the former chief of the Wilton (CT) Fire Department and a 44-year veteran of the fire service. He has a B.A. degree in fire administration and two master's degrees. He’s a contributing author to Fire Engineering and FireEngineering.com, the Fire Engineering Handbook for Firefighter I and II, and the 7th edition of the Fire Chief’s Handbook and author of the book Fire Officer's Guide to Occupational Safety and Health (Fire Engineering, 2019).

Hazmat: Foundation to Hazardous Materials

Simply put, if something endangers the public, the fire department typically plays some role in the response. Along those lines, in most communities it is the responsibility of the fire department to handle the release of hazardous materials (hazmat) and weapons of mass destruction (WMD). This module provides knowledge and information related to OSHA 1910.120 and the following NFPA Standard 1072 Job Performance Requirements: 4.1.1, 4.1.3, 4.2.1, 5.1.1, 5.1.4, and 5.1.5.
