Fire Engineering Training and ISFSI Unveil The Training Playbook — A Transformational Resource for Fire Service Training Leaders

Fire Engineering Training, in proud partnership with the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI), announces the launch of The Training Playbook — a groundbreaking resource designed to redefine how departments build, deliver, and measure their training programs. The Training Playbook is available exclusively at FireEngineeringTraining.com to ISFSI members and Fire Engineering Training subscribers.

In today’s fire service, the need for structured, high-quality training has never been greater. Yet, until now, there has been no unified guide to help training officers navigate the complexities of standards, readiness, and instructional leadership. The Training Playbook fills that gap — offering a comprehensive, actionable framework built by experts and backed by leading organizations in the field. Whether departments are building a training program from the ground up or refining existing practices, the Playbook provides clear, adaptable guidance to elevate effectiveness and impact.

“The Training Playbook is more than a manual,” said Brian Zaitz, President, International Society of Fire Service Instructors. “This partnership reflects our mission to inspire, support, and elevate instructors around the world. We’re proud to stand behind a resource that empowers training officers to lead with purpose and precision. It’s the kind of high-quality solution our members have been asking for. And now, it’s here on Fire Engineering Training.”

The Training Playbook will cover critical areas, including:

  • Understanding NFPA Standards and Organizations
A clear roadmap to decoding the standards that shape fire service operations, with guidance on how to apply them effectively in training environments
  • Mastering ISO Readiness
Tools and strategies to prepare departments for ISO audits, improve fire suppression ratings, and align training with measurable outcomes.
  • Personal Preparation for the Training Officer
A focus on leadership, mindset, and professional development — empowering instructors to lead with confidence and clarity.
  • Fundamentals of Training
Core principles of adult learning, curriculum design, and instructional delivery tailored to the fire service context. Resources include tactical tip training, with over 200 skills videos
  • And More
Including performance tracking, documentation best practices, and scalable solutions for departments of all sizes.

Content has been developed by some of the most respected subject matter experts in the fire service, including Doug Cline, Glenn Corbett, Bryan Edge, Phil Jose, Anthony Kastros, Stephen Marsar, Thomas Merrill, and Mark van der Feyst.

The Training Playbook is further supported through a collaborative effort that includes educational guidance and general informational support from the Insurance Services Office (ISO).

“ISO is pleased to support this initiative,” said Mike Morash, RVP, Community Hazard Mitigation, Underwriting Solutions, Verisk. “Our webinar series is intended to share information and help clarify aspects of the fire suppression rating schedule, so departments can better understand the elements considered during an ISO evaluation. By increasing awareness and understanding, The Training Playbook serves as a helpful educational resource for training officers and fire service leaders.”

“No one else in the industry is doing this,” said Bill Tuohig, Vice President, Fire Engineering Training. “We’re proud to be the first to offer a truly comprehensive, accessible resource for training officers. Our commitment is simple: bring the best training to every corner of the fire service. The Training Playbook is our promise to those who train others — that they’ll never have to do it alone.”
