A study of EMS refusals concluded that 20% of incident victims, who refuse medical treatment or transport initially, will subsequently visit the emergency department within the next week. Some of those visits may be too late to prevent significant effects. EMS professionals can considerably impact patient morbidity and mortality by taking the time to learn to navigate proper procedures for patient evaluation, information distribution, determination of decisional capability, and establishment of rapport. Only after your best efforts should documentation for refusals be accepted and reflect those preventative measures taken.
