JOSEPH M. ALVAREZ is a 30-year veteran of the fire service and a captain with the Maplewood (NJ) Fire Department, where he had worked on Tower Ladder 31 for 14 years and is assigned to Squad Co. 32. He is a NJ-certified fire instructor, level 2, and teaches at the Bergen County Fire Academy. He is also a NJ state fire official and a member of the Arson Task Force. He was responsible for implementing the training of the technical rescue team in Essex County. He has been a HOT instructor for FDIC International since 1998. He is a co-author of the search chapter of Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter I and II and the author of the “Bread-and-Butter” Ventilation video. He is a member of NJ-TF1 USAR and a battalion chief with the Wyckoff (NJ) Volunteer Fire Department.
