Dr. Neal Richmond

We’re delighted to introduce you to our Medical Director for Fire Engineering Training and The JEMS Academy, Dr. Neal Richmond.
Dr. Neal Richmond is currently Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of EMS Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a board-certified Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Medical Services. His research interests have focused on the management of time-critical emergencies, the social determinants of health, and the development of evidence-based quality measures for prehospital emergency medical service systems.
Dr. Richmond began his EMS career in New York City (NYC), where he served as Deputy Medical Director for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), Senior Research Fellow at the New York Academy of Medicine, and Assistant Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM). While in NYC, he was also Program Director for an affiliated EMS Fellowship with FDNY and AECOM, as well as Assistant Program Director for the Emergency Medicine residency training program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
Following his tenure in NYC, Dr. Richmond was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director for 911 Emergency Medical Services in Louisville, Kentucky, where he focused on the engineering and evolution of a stand-alone third-service model for prehospital care. His work there was featured in USA Today, Governing magazine, and in several Emergency Medical Services publications.
Dr. Richmond then served as Medical Director for the MedStar Mobile Healthcare system in Fort Worth, Texas, where his interests included clinical quality measurement in 911 EMS and a variety of out-of-hospital Mobile Integrated Healthcare programs. His efforts there, including research done in collaboration with the National Institute of Health Research Outcomes Consortium (NIH ROC), have been published in a number of medical, scientific and trade journals.
Dr. Richmond’s other interests have included developing EMS systems and Emergency Medicine programs in Asia and Central America, as well as efforts in Public Health and Emergency and Disaster Preparedness. He initiated the first on-site Emergency Medicine training and certification program in India, and he has worked as a high-altitude specialist and Senior Rescue Physician for the Himalayan Rescue Association in Nepal. Dr. Richmond has served as Medical Team Manager for FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue NY-Task Force-1 during the response to Hurricane Georges in the Dominican Republic, and in the FDNY World Trade Center response to the events of September 11, 2001. In addition, he has served on several boards and committees, including the American Heart Association, Rand Corporation, Department of Homeland Security, and New York City and State Health Departments.
